Answers

1. What write permissions do I need to have on my computer?

This question normally only affects users who are working on a corporate or organizational network where restrictions are placed on the users' access to their own computer. Vocab Clinic requires "write" access to a number of places on the hard drive to which it was installed. These include:

a. The "system" folder located in the main folder in which Vocab Clinic was installed, and

b. The "prefs" folder, located (for Windows XP and usually 2000) in the "\Application Data\Vocab Clinic" folder of the current user, which Windows normally stores under "C:\documents and settings". If you are unable to locate this folder on your system (it may vary according to the way Windows has been configured on your computer), search your hard drive for "Vocab Clinic\Prefs" to find it.

You may need to contact your system administrator to be given "write" permission for these folders.

2. How can I move my content files onto portable media?

Vocab Clinic® has an extremely flexible and versatile way of storing vocabulary media content files. You may choose to store the media files (more than 100 MB) either on your hard drive, or on removable media such as a CD, USB memory key, etc. The software will scan your computer and find all usable vocabulary content that it can. This feature allows you to store the bulky media files in the place that works best for you.

The media content is located in a folder entitled "MSA_content" (for Modern Standard Arabic Vocab Clinic) or "Content" (for Egyptian Arabic Vocab Clinic). If you purchased Vocab Clinic® on a physical CD, this will be located in the root directory of your CD. If you downloaded Vocab Clinic® from the Internet, then the folder will be located wherever you chose to save it at the time of installation. Depending on what your needs are, you can choose to save the "content" folder in any of the following locations:

- in the same directory that your Vocab Clinic® program is installed

- in the root directory of any hard drive on your computer (i.e., C:\, D:\, etc.)

- in the root directory of any removable media on your computer (for example, if your CD drive is "E:", then you would store the "content" folder under "E:\".

3.The program says that there is no active Internet connection, but I know I am connected. How do I fix this?

Vocab Clinic ® has a number of features that require the software to connect to the Internet. If you have firewall software running on your computer, you may experience difficulty in accessing the Online Resources, as well as in activating your software product. To solve this problem, we recommend adding Vocab Clinic® to your firewall software's list of programs authorized to access the Internet.

4. Do I need to have Arabic Windows to use Vocab Clinic?

You do not need to have an Arabic operating system installed to use Vocab Clinic®. The software has been designed to run without any type of Arabic language support from Windows.

5. The Arabic and/or Transliteration font is not working properly in Vocab Clinic. How can I fix it?

Vocab Clinic® installs a number of fonts upon installation. In most cases, these fonts will install with no problem.

If you are having trouble with the Arabic script or the transliteration script, you may attempt to reinstall Vocab Clinic (remove it from your system then run the install program again). Once you have reinstalled, reboot your computer and check to see if the font is displaying properly.

If this does not work, go to the "Fonts" folder located inside your Windows directory. Locate the file entitled "Arabweb1.ttf". This file may display itself as "Arabic Web", depending on your version of Windows. Move this file to your desktop (or another location of your choice). Make sure it is removed from your "Fonts" folder. Then, open the "Fonts" section of your Windows Control Panel. Select "File/Install New Font", and then select the "Arabweb1.ttf" file from the location to which you just moved it. Windows will install the font. Reboot your computer, then run Vocab Clinic™ again. The same process may be carried out for the "translit.ttf" file.

If you are unable to locate these font files, you may either find them in the "fonts" folder on the CD-ROM (if you purchased the CD version), or you can request that they be emailed to you by emailing support@learn-arabic-now.com.

6. When I "maximize" the Vocab Clinic® window, my screen goes black for a moment. Why is that?

Vocab Clinic® is re-sizing your screen display resolution so that the program takes up the full screen. This resizing causes most screens to turn black for a second or two. Do not worry... it will not cause any problems, and your screen display will be returned to its original dimensions when you close the program.

7. When I click the "record" button, the computer does not record my voice. No wavelength plot appears, and no sound can be heard when I click on the playback button. Why is this?

This means that your microphone is not set up properly to be able to record in Windows. To set it to work, you need to (if you are using MSA Vocab Clinic) adjust your microphone configuration in the "Adjust Microphone" wizard (click on the link in the Vocabulary Screen of Vocab Clinic), or, if you are using Egyptian Arabic Vocab Clinic, using the Audio properties section in the Control Panel of Windows. Once your microphone is set to record properly, it will work in Vocab Clinic®. The way that you do this varies slightly depending on what version of Windows you are using. 8. I am unable to connect to the Online Resources section. What can I do to connect?

Vocab Clinic ® has a number of features that require the software to connect to the Internet. If you have firewall software running on your computer, you may experience difficulty in accessing the Online Resources, as well as in activating your software product. To solve this problem, we recommend adding Modern Standard Arabic Vocab Clinic® to your firewall software's list of programs authorized to access the Internet.

9. When I try to install the software, it tells me that I am not authorized to install. What can I do? (Windows 2000, XP)

Many Windows 2000 and Windows XP computers limit the ability of non-administrators to write files onto the computer's hard drive, for security reasons (especially in corporations or other organizations) . If you do not have administrative rights to write files (which includes installing software), you should contact your system/network administrator to have the software installed, or log in as a user that has administrative rights.

10. When I run Vocab Clinic, as soon as it enters the "What's New" screen I get a "Script Error", and have to close the program. How do I fix this?

This issue occurs most often in secure network settings, such as corporate or governmental computer networks, which tend to put strict layers of security over their computers.

In order to provide the broad range of functionality that it does, Vocab Clinic® writes a series of small "preference files" (text files) onto the user's hard drive. These files are written in the "Prefs" folder of the Egyptian Arabic program installation folder, which by default is C:\Program Files\Egyptian Arabic Vocab Clinic\Prefs (however, on Windows 2000 and XP these files may be written in a seperate folder for "Vocab Clinic" under C:\documents and settings\application data\). In order to allow Vocab Clinic to function, the current user must have "write" capabilities for this folder. Contact your system/network administrator if you are having problems with this, and have them provide write permission for this folder.

11. I am unable to authenticate my software online (Modern Standard Arabic).

There are three methods available for authenticating your software. If you are connected to the Internet, but when you try to use the "authenticate online" option you receive a message that no active Internet connection can be found, then you may need to adjust your firewall settings. If you are still unable to connect, but are able to access the Internet on your web browser on the same computer, then select the "Website Activation" option, and follow the instructions. If neither of these options work, select the "Email" option, follow the instructions, and we will send a return code to you as quickly as we are able.

12. How do I use the "website authentication" method? (Modern Standard Arabic)?

In order to provide an authentication code to unlock Vocab Clinic®, the authentication webpage must be opened using the "Open Website" button from within the Authentication process in the software. You must have the shockwave plugin installed on your web browser to be able to get a return code. Once the code is provided, it must be copied and pasted back into the Vocab Clinic® software.

It is strongly recommended that the user click inside the field containing the code, and then press CTRL+A (i.e., hold down the "Control" key and press the letter A) to select the entire code for copying, rather than attempting to select it manually using the mouse. There are a number of line breaks and hidden characters that are all a part of the return code. If any of them are missed, the code will not be able to unlock your software.

13. I am unable to authenticate my software online (Egyptian Arabic).

There are two methods available for authenticating your software. If you are connected to the Internet, but when you try to use the "authenticate online" option you receive a message that no active Internet connection can be found, then you may need to adjust your firewall settings. If you are still unable to connect, select the "Email" option, follow the instructions, and we will send a return code to you as quickly as we are able.

14. How can I upgrade my Egyptian Arabic Vocab Clinic® version 1.0 or 1.1 to 2.0?

If you have a current version of version 1.0 or 1.1, you are entitled to a free upgrade to version 2.0. Please contact us by email at support@egyptianarabic.com to work out the details. We generally give the new version in exchange for your version 1.0 CD.

15. When I print detailed lists of words from the program (Egyptian Arabic Vocab Clinic®), the computer tells me there is an error. What is the problem?

This problem generally occurs in version 1.0 of Egyptian Arabic Vocab Clinic®. It can be solved by downloading the version 1.1 patch, available in our Download section.
